Doghouse: The Ex + That Fucking Tank + Nose

Saturday 19th April 2014
The Ex + That Fucking Tank + Nose
£8 advanced from

“Once seen, a live performance by ... The Ex is never forgotten. Imagine two men in short pants and army boots, guitars slung impossibly low, careering round the stage like demented dodgem cars, backed by a veritable arsenal of precision-honed polyrhythms” - The Wire

The adventurous and inspiring Dutch punk/noise/jazz/whatever quartet have defied categorization ever since they started playing in 1979. Born out of the punk explosion, when anything and everything was possible, the band have still managed to retain both curiosity and passion for their music. Using guitars, bass, drums and voice as their starting point they have continued to musically explore undiscovered areas right up to the present day: the early 1980s saw collaborations with jazz musicians and an Iraqi-Kurdish band. In the 90s the group found a myriad of partners from varied musical and non-musical backgrounds including Kamagurka, Tom Cora, Sonic Youth, Han Bennink, Jan Mulder, Shellac and Wolter Wierbos. In 2002 The Ex set up a lively musical exchange with Ethiopia, which eventually led to two CD recordings and hundreds of concerts with the legendary saxophonist Getatchew Mekuria. More recently their 2011 tour with the specially assembled Brass Unbound bigband (featuring Ken Vandermark and Mats Gustafasen among other players) was a joyous 10 city blowout that brought their music to a whole new generation of UK fans.

The three music-obsessed Staehli brothers [pr. STEH-Lee] have spent this time nurturing a raw psychic power of rock 'n' roll energy to set their, and our, little worlds on fire and find salvation in sound.

Not long after we started the band a debut cassette was released by the Southern Californian label Burger Records. Our first LP ‘Howls of Joy’, which was out on Final Taxi Records (Paris) in France, was released internationally by the London-based label Ample Play in February 2013 and got pretty good reviews here and there. Here are a few from the British press and radio:

As ingredients for an album, unimpeachable.” 8/10 Drowned In Sound

Doghouse: Post War Glamour Girls + support

Post War Glamour Girls, Caitlin Park, Nose, Fall to Fly
Plus after band set from DJ Russ (kibbutz) - Friday May 24th 2013

It's taken about a year of trying to finally nail down a date for Post War Glamour Girls. Without doubt one of the most exciting bands to come out of Leeds for some time and we are very pleased to have them. The supports were all sorted too until we were given the chance to book Caitlin Park. Given that she's on tour from Australia such chances don't come along often so we've shoehorned her onto the bill, we hope you'll agree that it's a good move..
